Camping Like Kings

Meet: Saturday (9/17) TroGro at 6:45am

Return: Sunday (9/18) around 6pm

Difficulty: 4.5/8 Distance: 16.1 miles Elevation (ft): 1,298 (split into an ~9 mi and ~6 mi hike on each day)

Recommended Prior Experience: minor hiking experience

Location of Trip: Kings Canyon National Park (Mist Falls and Zumwalt Meadow)

Native Land: Mono (Monache), Yokuts, Tübatulabal, Paiute, and Western Shoshone

Leave early Saturday morning, drive ~5 hours to Kings Canyon National Park (bring your best road trip playslists). Once we get there, we’ll hike Mist Falls (around 9 miles) – think big trees, creek (maybe swim??), mountain views, waterfall (!!!). We’ll camp *like kings* Saturday night. Sunday we’ll do a more mellow hike, Zumwalt Meadow/Roaring River Falls (more waterfall action), before making the trek back to SC.

What to Bring:

Backpack

Sleeping pad

Sleeping bag 

Warm layers (thermal long sleeves, sweater, long pants)

Comfortable hiking clothes

Hiking boots

Socks / underwear

Toiletries

AT LEAST 2L of water

Sun protection

Headlamp/flashlight

Any necessary medication

Mess kit (plate/bowl + fork/knife/spork)

Bug spray (optional)

Bathing suit (optional)

Towel easy to pack (optional)

Hammock (optional, HIGHLY recommended)

TRIP DIFFICULTY RATING SYSTEM

  • Difficulty rating for trips

    • 1: No physical activity.

    • 2: Leisurely walk.

    • 3: 3-5 miles, about 1500 ft of gain, well maintained trails. About 3 hours of continuous activity.

    • 4: 5-10 miles, about 3000 ft of gain, well maintained trails. 4-6 hours of continuous activity.

    • 5: 10-14 miles, over 3000 ft of gain, variable trail conditions possible. Full day of continuous activity.

    • 6: At high altitude. 10-14 miles, over 3000 ft of gain, variable trail conditions possible. Full day of continuous activity.

    • 7: Technical skills may be necessary. At high altitude. Scrambling involved
