'Twas a night during finals, when all through Big Sur

Not a sco guide was stirring, not even Arthur;

The stockings were hung by the fire with care,

In hopes that St. Nikolai would soon would be there;

The participants were nestled all snug in their bags;

While visions of sugar-plums danced in the mountain crags,

Emma in her overalls, and Caro in her crocs,

Had just settled their bones after collecting some rocks.

When out on the valley there arose such a clatter,

I sprang from my tent to see what was the matter.

Away under the starlight I flew like a flash,

Tore off my headlamp and started to laugh

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow,

Gave a lustre of midday to objects below,

When what to my wondering eyes did appear,

But a miniature backpack and eight tiny reindeer,

With a little old participant driver so lively and quick,

I knew in a moment he must be St. Nick.

More rapid than lizards his coursers they came,

And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name:

"Now, Uma! now, Alex! now John and Hannah!

On, Sibelle! on, Johann! on, PK and Anna!

To the top of shack! to the top of the rock wall!

Now hike away! Hike away! Hike away all!"
